Police Constable

There are three ways of becoming a police officer for the Thunder Bay Police Service.

  1. If you are currently a police officer with another police service, please see the link at the bottom of this page.
  2. You have no experience, you can apply to the Thunder Bay Police Service only after completing applicant testing with Applicant Testing Services
  3. You can also consider applying for our cadet program which is an entry level civilian position.

Cadet Program

Most police cadets are chosen from candidates for police constable who may need to gain some life and work experience before being hired as an officer. These Cadets work on our Front Desk dealing both directly and over the telephone with members of the general public. Usually Cadets will work in this position for a period of one to two years. Many will then be promoted to the position of Special Constable. This position provides the member with exposure to our Court system and allows for more professional and personal growth. Again this is usually for a period of one to two years prior to attending Ontario Police College to become a police constable. In order to apply for Police Cadet a candidate must meet the same requirements as required for police constable including having a valid Certificate of Results. Cadets are full-time members of our Service and therefore are entitled to all our benefits including enrollment in the pension plan.
