Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Empress Avenue South for a weapons call at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived they learned a resident of a nearby Windemere Avenue South address saw a male attempt to open his truck door. The resident confronted the male who fled.

The concerned resident drove another vehicle he was in possession, an SUV, in the direction the male fled. The resident eventually caught up to the male in the 100 block of Empress Avenue South.

The concerned resident exited his vehicle, at which point the accused flashed a knife. This led the concerned resident to flee back to his home to call police.

The male attempted to drive away in the SUV the resident left behind, but was unsuccessful because he could not operate the vehicle’s standard transmission.

Officers were able to locate the suspect in the area just before 3 a.m. and make an arrest. The accused became combative with officers as they completed that arrest.

Kyle Dale WESCOTT, 21, of Thunder Bay, is charged with Assault With a Weapon, Assaulting a Peace Officer x 2, Assault With Intent to Resist Arrest, Trespass, and Theft Over $5,000.

He appeared in court Tuesday morning and was remanded into custody.
