If the dangers of distracted driving haven't been enough to prevent some drivers from using their cell phones while operating a motor vehicle, beginning January 1st, 2019, distracted driving penalties are increasing substantially once again.
The set fine for a first offence will be $615, including surcharges and costs, and upon conviction it will include 3 demerit points and a 3-day license suspension.
There will also be escalating sanctions with the conviction of a second offence resulting in a fine up to $2000 with 6 demerit points and a 7-day license suspension. For a third or subsequent distracted driving offence a conviction will result in a fine up to $3000 with 6 demerit points and a 30 day license suspension.
The Thunder Bay Police Service will be aggressively enforcing these offences to continue to make our roadways as safe as possible. The public is reminded that simply holding a cell phone while operating your motor vehicle on the road is an offence and a conviction will result in the penalties stated above.
The answer is simple. Put your phone away where it is not easily accessible while you are operating your motor vehicle.
