Police investigating serious collision

Incident Date:
Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - 14:15
Incident Number:
P17060521
Location:
Thunder Bay
Date Published: 2017-09-13

A middle aged man is in hospital in serious condition following a single motor vehicle collision at approximately 3:08 a.m. this morning.

The man was driving a late model Dodge Ram pickup truck north bound on Balmoral Street near Beverly Street when his vehicle left the road and rolled over following a collision with a hydro pole. Police, Fire and EMS responded to scene. The driver was freed from the vehicle by Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue and transported to hospital by Superior North EMS. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

The TBPS Traffic Unit closed Balmoral Street in the vicinity of the collision to conduct an investigation. The street remained closed until 12:20 p.m.

During the closure, an individual took it upon themselves to drive through the road closure sign/barricade and proceed through the investigative scene. This driver was promptly stopped by our officers and charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Disobeying a Sign.

We cannot emphasize enough the need to obey road closure signs and barricades. In the case of police investigations, roads are often closed to allow investigators to conduct thorough scene examinations.

Disobeying these closers endangers the lives of police officers and other emergency responders. It can also jeopardize the investigation.

The Traffic Unit continues to investigate this collision. Anyone with information on this incident should contact the TBPS Traffic Unit at 684-1200.
