On April 23, 2018, at 2:43 p.m., an officer with the Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit conducted a traffic stop of a black pick-up truck on Island Drive for using licence plates that were not authorized for that vehicle.

Upon approaching the driver, the officer noted something suspicious about the seating arrangement in the truck: The driver of the vehicle was sitting in a fold-up lawnchair in the place where the manufacturer's driver seat ought to be.

In addition to this, the vehicle was deemed unsafe for a multitude of defects, including a broken windshield impeding the driver's view; a defective door handle that effectively trapped the driver inside the truck; an insecure load in the box; and no seat belt buckles where the seatbelts could be fastened.

The young driver was charged with a number of offences as a result of this incident.

The operator was also charged for being a suspended driver, and being the owner of a motor vehicle and operating it on a highway with no insurance.

The vehicle was subsequently impounded.
