Plane Diverted to Thunder Bay for Arrest of Unruly Passenger

Thunder Bay Police officers were dispatched to the Thunder Bay International Airport and boarded an Air Canada flight just after 4:00 p.m. on January 12, 2018.

Officers were briefed on the situation by the flight crew and requested the male to exit the plane.

He complied and was arrested once outside the plane.

Awali Yusuf Abdi, 31 years old from Ottawa, Ontario has been charged with Assault in an Aircraft in Flight contrary to section 77(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. He was remanded into custody on Saturday and will appear in court again this afternoon.

Assault Arrest

Just after 12:30 p.m. a TBPS officer arrives at the Thunder Center to assist with a male who was causing issues outside of the Dollarama on Main Street and was being followed by group of 5 to 6 people.

The officer became concerned for the welfare of this male as he was running into traffic on a private roadway.

When approached by the officer the male became combative and as a result was arrested for Assault Peace Officer.

Other police units arrived on scene to assist with the arrest and escorted the male to the Balmoral Police Station.

Security Guard Assaulted

An incident at a Memorial Avenue drug store resulted in an assault of store's security guard early Sunday morning.

TBPS Uniform Patrol officers responded to a 911 call from the Shoppers Drug Mart at 1186 Memorial Avenue at approximately 3:40 a.m. on November 19, 2017.

It was reported that a male shoplifter was struggling with a security guard outside of the store.

The accused was arrested by police upon their arrival. It is alleged that the male security guard received a minor injury from a knife used by the accused during the confrontation.

Police investigating Minnesota Park stabbing

The Thunder Bay Police Service is investigating a stabbing that occurred at Minnesota Park on Minnesota Street at approximately 8 p.m.

The victim is an 18-year-old male.

He was taken to the hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The accused male was located a short time after and was arrested.

The investigation is continuing.

UPDATE: Second Arrest in Aggravated Assault

Members of the TBPS Community Response Team were successful in locating a second male that was wanted in relation to the October 1, 2017 Assault in the Limbrick and James Street area that sent a 23 year old male to the hospital.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on October 4, 2017, the suspect was observed walking on University Drive.

He was approached by officers and arrested without incident.

Daniel Simon Shawinimash, 24 years old, appeared in court this morning on Aggravated Assault and Robbery charges.

He was remanded into custody.

Serious Assault at Limbrick Street Complex - Suspect Arrested

A 23 yr old male who was taken to hospital after a serious assault around 3:20 p.m. on October 1, 2017 in the 500 block of North James Street remains in serious condition. Investigators have been in contact with his family.

The Thunder Bay Police Criminal Investigations Branch with the assistance of the public have now identified all individuals seen in the released surveillance photos.

As a result, members of the Intelligent Unit located one of the suspects just after 7:00 p.m. on October 3, 2017 in the Limbrick Street area.

Youth Arrested With Assault Police

A Thunder Bay Police Officer received minor injuries while attempting to arrest a 15 year old male last evening shortly after 8:00 p.m.

Taxi Driver Assaulted

A 37 year old female appeared in court over the weekend after being arrested for assaulting a taxi driver.

The female was picked up by the taxi at approximately 2:30 a.m. on March 12, 2017 from a Dawson Road location and driven to a Red River Road location. The female attempted to leave without paying for the ride. An argument began and the female who was sitting the backseat began assaulting the 56 year old male driver. He was able to radio for help. Another taxi and police arrived minutes later and the female was taken into custody.

Blucher Ave Assault

Officers were called to Blucher Ave at 11:15 p.m. on September 16, 2016 on a report of two individuals being assaulted by a group of people. Officers arrive a few minutes later to observe the assault in progress. The group took off running however three individuals were arrest by officers in the immediate area.
