Theft of Motor Vehicle Arrest

On Monday January 22, 2018 at 2:15 a.m., an officer on general patrol observed a vehicle being driven by a young male who was believed to be an unlicensed driver.

The officer conducted a traffic stop at Arthur Street and the Expressway. The driver identified himself and was confirm to be unlicensed.

Thunder Bay Police seeking Fort William First Nation artists

The Thunder Bay Police Service today made a call for Fort William First Nation artists to collaborate with a team in designing a display of works that will be housed at the 1200 Balmoral Street police station.

In the spirit of the Friendship Agreement signed with Fort William First Nation, the Thunder Bay Police Service is looking to recognize that it is on the traditional territory of Fort William First Nation, signatory to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850.

Three Suspects Arrested in Robbery

Thunder Bay Police responded to a 911 call from the Commissary Convenience Store reporting a robbery that had occurred just before 7:30 p.m. on January 17, 2018.

The male clerk advised that a male entered the store with a balaclava and demanded money while pointing a syringe at him.

Plane Diverted to Thunder Bay for Arrest of Unruly Passenger

Thunder Bay Police officers were dispatched to the Thunder Bay International Airport and boarded an Air Canada flight just after 4:00 p.m. on January 12, 2018.

Officers were briefed on the situation by the flight crew and requested the male to exit the plane.

He complied and was arrested once outside the plane.

Awali Yusuf Abdi, 31 years old from Ottawa, Ontario has been charged with Assault in an Aircraft in Flight contrary to section 77(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. He was remanded into custody on Saturday and will appear in court again this afternoon.

Robbery Suspect to be Identified

The Thunder Bay Police Service is releasing a video of a suspect responsible for a robbery with a gun last evening.

Officers attended the Mac's Convenience Store located on Cumberland Street to take a report of an incident that occurred at 11:55 p.m. on January 15, 2018. The 24 year old male employee stated that a male entered the store and walked straight to the counter and demanded money. The male had his face covered and was holding a gun. The employee complied and the suspect left the store without incident.

Police are releasing images of a suspect responsible for a robbery at the Shopper's Drug Mart located on East Arthur Street on December 21, 2017 at approximately 3:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, January 2, 2018 just before 7:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a panic alarm at the Barb's Laundromat located on Victoria Ave. 

Heron Street Incident Update No. 2

On January 10, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. a 911 call was received reporting the sound of gunshots and a male outside with a gun. TBPS officers were quickly on the scene to secure the perimeter and contain a house located in the 100 block of Heron Street.

The Command post was set up and efforts began to communicate with individuals believed to be in the residence. At 9:07 p.m. a male and female exited the house, surrendered to police, arrested and transported to the Balmoral Police station.

Thunder Bay Police Service Launches A Change Initiative

Thunder Bay Police Service is launching the next phase of its Change Initiative with a working group recruitment campaign called "Shaping Our Future" to help aid the service with diversity training, recruitment, communications and community policing.

In December 2017, the Thunder Bay Police Services Board reviewed a presentation highlighting the goals of the Change Initiative for Thunder Bay Police Service and a resolution to support it passed unanimously. The proposal outlined a major undertaking not meant to be treated as a short-term project.
