Temporary Road Closure

Thunder Bay Police Service is advising motorists of a road closure as a result of a non-injury single motor vehicle collision on Wardrope Avenue.

Wardrope Avenue will be closed from Superiorview Drive to Belton Road for approximately 8 hours to facilitate repair work by Thunder Bay Hydro.

Festive RIDE 2017 comes to an end

With the end to 2017 comes the conclusion of the Festive Ride Program.

The success of a program such as Festive Ride is a double edge sword. The Thunder Bay Police Service had it most successful R.I.D.E (Reduce Impaired Driver Everywhere) season in recent history.

That is a great accomplishment and speaks well of the officers involved and their diligence towards reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roads of Thunder Bay.

Reminder regarding Traffic Lights

Just a reminder regarding what to do when approaching a Traffic Light that isn't working or flashing.

If the light isn't operating, Every Driver approaching an intersection shall yield the right of way to any vehicle that has entered it from an intersecting highway - Section 135(2) Highway Traffic Act.

Slippery Road Conditions

With the change in the weather from Rain to Snow the roads are slippery and snow packed.

Use caution when driving and leave yourself enough time to stop.

The couple of minutes extra it is going to take to get somewhere today is much quicker then if you are in a collision.

Hit and Run Involving Cyclist

Hit and Run - Carrick Street at Central Avenue

On Friday Nov. 10 at approximately 2:30 p.m., a cyclist was travelling northbound on Carrick Street proceeding through a green light on Central Avenue.

At the time, a brown Chevy pickup was also travelling northbound on Carrick Street and turned right onto Central Avenue making contact with the cyclist and knocking him off his bicycle.

The cyclist sustained minor injuries and damage to his bike.

Driver involved in fatal collision with pedestrian charged

The investigation into the fatal Vehicle Pedestrian collision that occurred July 26th, 2017 at 6:30 pm on Algoma Street has been concluded.

This collision resulted in the death of Frank Tropea Sr, due to the injuries he sustained.

The driver of the motor vehicle has been charged under section 130 of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, for Careless Driving.

 

RIDE nabs five impaired drivers

It was a busy weekend on Thunder Bay roadways.

As communicated in a previous media release, Thunder Bay Police were out conducting RIDE (Reduce Impaired Drivers Everywhere) stops Friday and Saturday evening.

Reduce Impaired Drivers Everywhere (R.I.D.E)

Thunder Bay Police Service through the support of the R.I.D.E. program will once again be on our roads Friday and Saturday night conducting RIDE checks, focusing on drivers impaired by Alcohol and/or Drugs.

Our goal is to bring awareness to the public and encourage citizen's to make a plan for a safe fun evening.

Plan your ride home. Don't Drink and Drive.

There will be many strange sightings this weekend so don't let your fun be ruined by frightening events such as being injured or worse from making the wrong choice.

National School Bus Safety Week

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – More than 130 drivers have reportedly failed to stop for the flashing lights and stop signs of school buses in just the first half of October.

It’s a problem that appears to be getting worse.

“There seems to be more distracted drivers on the road,” said Barb Siegers, bus driver and location safety manager for First Student Canada. “People just aren’t paying attention.

The school bus stop sign violation statistic does not include infraction reported in the third week of October, which is ironically National School Bus Safety Week.

Three Vehicle Collision

A TBPS investigated a three car collision at the intersection of Red River Road and Court Street just after 9:00 Wednesday morning.

The investigation revealed that a black vehicle travelling westbound on Red River Road failed to stop for a red light and collided into a car and a school bus that were travelling on Court Street through the intersection. At the time of the collision, there were no children on the bus. Two individuals were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The female driver of the black vehicle has been charged with Red Light - Fail to Stop.
