The swift and decisive actions of police officers in a courtroom resulted in the arrest of an individual who tried to forcefully obtain an officer’s firearm.

Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service were present in a courtroom at the Thunder Bay Courthouse on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 12.

The accused approached an officer and attempted to gain control of the officer’s firearm. The accused was eventually arrested after a struggle. One officer sustained minor injuries.

“I commend our officers for their actions and quick response to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Thunder Bay Police Service Chief Darcy Fleury.

The accused was transported to the Thunder Bay District Jail.

Jonathan Edward MASSICOTTE, 27, is charged with Assaulting a Peace Officer, Disarming a Peace Officer, and Resisting a Peace Officer.

MASSICOTTE remains in custody under a separate court order.
