The Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS), today announced the launch of a pilot program deploying an innovative, first-generation biometric monitoring solution designed to enhance the safety and dignity of people in custody. The CustodyProtect™ pilot project is implemented in collaboration with 4Sight Labs and is believed to be the first of its kind implemented in Canada.

According to TBPS Inspector Joe Dampier, the technology sees what humans can’t.

“People who are detained in our cells are constantly visually monitored. What officers can’t see is what might be happening inside a person’s body. This technology alerts us to certain health events, so we can respond accordingly, right away,” Dampier said. “CustodyProtect is an effective tool to enhance safety while maintaining the rights of people in custody.”

The CustodyProtect solution provides preventative, compassion-focused support. With continuous, unbiased visibility into the welfare of people in custody via biometric readings, the technology allows early intervention to mitigate emergencies.

“We applaud the Thunder Bay Police Service’s bold steps to drive advancements in protecting the dignity and rights of people in custody through pioneering technology,” said John DeFalco, CEO of 4Sight Labs.

“CustodyProtect provides police officers and personnel with invaluable, objective visibility to enable early intervention while embedding compassion into custodial operations.”

“As CustodyProtect exemplifies, we hold an unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of all individuals in our care while forging courageously on the path of progress,” noted Dampier.
