Incident Date

As residents continue to seek more online shopping opportunities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Economic Crimes Unit would like to remind the public to be on guard against potential frauds.

When making purchases online, shoppers should avoid making any kind of unsecured payments. Sending e-money transfers to strangers or paying with gift cards, for example, are practices that should be avoided as they may leave people susceptible to fraud.

Despite a likely increase in online shopping during COVID-19, the TBPS has not seen a significant spike in fraud complaints related to this practice. But the best way to be protected from fraud is to always remain vigilant of it.
