Monday, January 15th, 2018 will mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Constable John S. Kusznier.

In honour of John's memory, the Thunder Bay Police Service will be lowering their flags to half-mast tomorrow to commemorate the sacrifice he made serving his community. Thunder Bay Police Constable John S. Kusznier is the only member in the history of the Thunder Bay Police Service to have been killed in the line of duty.

The service is releasing a video interview to mark this anniversary. 

Background Information:

Constable John S. Kusznier was killed in the line of duty on January 15, 1978 while responding to a disturbance in the parking lot of a local nightclub. Constable Kusznier encountered two men armed with handguns that began shooting at Constable Kusznier and his partner. An exchange of gunfire then took place and Constable Kusznier was mortally wounded.

The Current River Bridge on Highway 11/17 was dedicated to the memory of Constable John S. Kusznier on May 1, 2010.
