The Thunder Bay Police Service has charged a 22-year-old Thunder Bay man with arson in connection to a recent house fire.

Police were originally dispatched to a disturbance in the 2100 block of Arthur Street at about 3:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. When dispatched police were made aware that there could be weapons involved.

Shortly after officers arrived they observed a male on the roof of the home. The house was fully engulfed at this point.

Moments later the male was able to get onto the garage, which was detached from the burning home. Through police negotiation the male eventually exited the garage roof and made it safely onto the ground.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and successfully rescued a cat, rabbit and bird from the home.

The male was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for medical assessment, and later charged with arson.

The name of the accused is being withheld to help protect the identity of the victims.
