A city police officer entered a river to help rescue a woman who had jumped, or fallen, into the water from a bridge Sunday evening.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Branch were dispatched to the 1100-block area of Waterford Street just before 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13, following reports that someone had fallen from a bridge and into the river near the CLE grounds.

Firefighters with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Paramedics with Superior North EMS were also dispatched to the scene.

Officers arriving on scene were informed the woman was possibly intoxicated on crystal methamphetamine and did not appear to be a strong swimmer.

The first-responding Primary Response Branch officers located an adult female in the water. She appeared to be struggling and had briefly submerged into the water.

The officer entered the water and helped bring the female back to safety on shore.

At this point she became combative with officers and attempted to jump back into the water.

She was brought safely to awaiting paramedics.

While she remained combative, paramedics were able to provide her with medical care and transport her to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation and treatment.
