Thunder Bay Police Service officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check on Algoma Street near Park Avenue in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 2.

During the RIDE program a driver of an SUV approached officers just before 2:45 a.m. Officers observed signs that the driver was impaired, and noticed paraphernalia consistent with drug consumption in plain view.

An investigation revealed the driver’s licence was suspended, and he was wanted on outstanding warrants by another police service.

The driver failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and was subsequently arrested. Further tests by a Drug Recognition Expert determined the male was impaired by drug.

A 40-year-old Hurkett, Ont., man is charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Breach of Recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

He is also charged under the Highway Traffic Act for Driving While Under Suspension.
