Tips from the public helped lead to the identification of a suspect who operated an all-terrain vehicle to flee from police officers last month.

On Saturday, March 30, Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the area of High Street and Oliver Road after receiving reports of two males on an ATV who were not wearing helmets.

The vehicle was seen heading south on Memorial Avenue approaching the Central Avenue intersection, before turning into the parking lot of a business on the street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it sped away onto Memorial Avenue before nearly colliding with another vehicle.

The suspects were subsequently tracked and later located in the area of Logan Avenue. An officer attempted to arrest the suspects — and grabbed onto one — but was assaulted and dragged as the suspects drove away.

The investigation resulted in a suspect being identified. The suspect turned himself in to police earlier this month.

Ryan KARKKAINEN, 18, of Thunder Bay, has been charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation, Assault Peace Officer, and Resist Peace Officer. He has been released with a future court appearance date.
