The Thunder Bay Police Service has charged a youth in connection with a weekend assault that was captured on video and shared on social media.

The initial incident took place around 2 a.m. on Saturday, May 30 in the Current River area. A lone male victim was walking when he was followed closely from behind by a youth female accused.

The accused then struck the victim before fleeing on foot.

A video of the incident, which was recorded by witnesses known to the accused, was later circulated on social media. The victim was not known to the accused or witnesses recording the incident.

Police identified an accused and witnesses, but the victim remained unknown during the earlier stages of this investigation. After making an appeal to the public, a victim was positively identified.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, police formally laid a charge of Assault against a 16-year-old Thunder Bay female on Tuesday, June 3.

The matter is expected to be addressed in court on July 30.

The identity of the accused is being withheld in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
