Thunder Bay Police Service investigation into reports of peace disturbance leads to charges

A Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) investigation has resulted in charges.
 
Officers with the Primary Response Unit were dispatched to the Red River Road and Regent Street area on August 20, 2026, in response to a report of peace being disturbed.
 
The individual left the scene prior to officers arriving.
 
While officers were in the area the TBPS Communications Centre received a second call regarding a vehicle being damaged.
 
Further investigation led to a suspect being located and arrested in the Algoma Street area.
 
While officers were searching the suspect on scene, he attempted to gain access to an officer’s firearm.
 
“This is another example of the importance of our officers’ training and professionalism that helps keep every situation controlled and safe for all involved.” Chief Darcy Fleury.
 
As a result of the investigation, 34-year-old Sydney MEGAN from Thunder Bay is facing the following charges: 
• Mischief under $5,000 
• Obstruct peace officer 
• Disarming a peace officer 
• Fail to comply with probation order (three counts)
 
The accused was remanded into custody following their first court appearance.

Recently, an officer was assaulted while responding to a robbery call. Because of bystander video, the community is well aware of that incident, but there are others. An officer was assaulted last week while responding to a mischief call. Violence against those entrusted with protecting our community is unacceptable yet continues to occur. Assaults against police: Total in 2025: 56 Total in 2024: 68 There should be none at all. In difficult moments, our members stand together, supporting one another with strength, compassion and an unwavering sense of duty. That bond reflects what it means to be part of the policing family: no member faces adversity alone. I stand firmly with our officers and thank residents for the support they continue to show them. I am deeply proud of the professionalism, integrity, courage and teamwork our members demonstrate every day. Their commitment shows that policing is a calling to serve and protect. The same qualities that make me proud of our members are the qualities we seek in those who will serve alongside them. Chat with the Chief events returning this fall

The Thunder Bay Police Service is pleased to announce the return of Chat with the Chief events this fall. Chat with the Chief events are information sessions that provide opportunities for community members to learn more about policing in our community and have their questions answered by Chief Darcy Fleury. “Listening to the people of Thunder Bay is essential to how we move forward as a police service," explained TBPS Chief Darcy Fleury. "These sessions give us a chance to hear directly from community members, answer their questions, and understand what matters most to them. Community input has already shaped important initiatives like Project Support, and we want to continue building on that progress together.” This fall’s first event is taking place at the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre in the Meeting Room on September 3, 2026, at 10:30 AM. Fraud Friday: ATM cash-trapping scams

The Thunder Bay Police Service is reminding residents to be cautious when using automated teller machines (ATMs) following reports of a cash-trapping scam in other communities. No cases of this type have been reported to the Thunder Bay Police Service at this time. This advisory is being shared to help the public recognize the potential risk and take precautions. In a cash-trapping scam, a device is placed over or inside an ATM’s cash dispenser. The machine may appear to complete the withdrawal, but the cash is held by the device. A fraudster can then return and collect it after the customer leaves. Protect yourself: • Check the ATM for loose parts, unusual attachments, or signs of tampering. • Use ATMs in well-lit, high-traffic locations whenever possible. • If cash is not dispensed, do not leave immediately. Contact your financial institution using a trusted number and report the problem to the ATM operator. • Review your account and promptly report any transaction you do not recognize. If an ATM appears to have been tampered with, do not use it. Report suspicious activity to the Thunder Bay Police Service. If you have lost money or disclosed banking information, contact your financial institution immediately and report the incident to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm).
