Break, Enter, and Robbery Unit investigation into several robberies leads to charges

A Thunder Bay Police Service Break, Enter, and Robbery (BEAR) Unit investigation has resulted in dozens of charges.


On August 9, 2026, officers with the Primary Response Unit attended a business in the Cumberland Street North area in response to reports of a robbery.


The suspect left the scene before officers arrived.


On August 10, 2026, officers with the Primary Response Unit were dispatched to a business on Balsam Street in response to a robbery.


The suspect left the scene before officers arrived.


On August 14, 2026, officers responded to a business in the Balsam Street area following another robbery, by the same suspect.


The suspect left the scene before officers arrived.


The BEAR Unit became involved in the ongoing investigation.


On August 24, 2026, officers were dispatched to a business in the Cumberland Street North area in response to a robbery.


The suspect left the scene before officers arrived.


On August 26, 2026, the suspect was located and arrested in the Cumberland Street North and Villa Street area.


That same day, BEAR Unit officers connected the suspect to three ongoing robbery investigations at a business in the Beverly Street area which occurred between August 18, 2026, and August 19, 2026, leading to additional charges.


As a result of the investigation, 25-year-old Jayden MATTHEWS of Thunder Bay is facing the following charges:

• Robbery with weapon (three counts)

• Robbery with violence (four counts)

• Disguise with intent (three counts)

• Obstruct peace officer

• Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (six counts)

• Failure to comply with release order (seven counts)


The accused was remanded into custody following their first court appearance. 

Primary Response Unit investigation into motor vehicle collision leads to charges

TB26040123 A Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Unit and Traffic Unit investigation has led to charges. Officers with the Primary Response Unit were dispatched to the Memorial Avenue and Central Avenue area on October 4, 2026, at approximately 7:20 PM in response to a motor vehicle collision. On scene, officers located a pickup truck and minivan with severe damage. One of the drivers was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit became involved in the investigation. As a result of the investigation, a Thunder Bay resident is facing the following charges: • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs • Dangerous operation The unnamed accused’s charges have not been read in court as they have been released under an undertaking with a future court date. The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.

SIU concludes Thunder Bay investigation

The Special Investigations Unit announced it has closed its investigation into an incident involving Thunder Bay Police Service officers that occurred in June 2026. The SIU found no basis to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence and concluded their investigation with no further process. With the conclusion of the SIU investigation, the Thunder Bay Police Service will now commence its required administrative review in accordance with Section 81 of the Community Safety and Policing Act. The purpose of the administrative investigation is to review member conduct, the policing provided, and procedures all as they relate to the incident. This administrative review will be reported to the Thunder Bay Police Service Board upon completion. Update: Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Unit investigation leads to arrest

A Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Unit investigation has resulted in multiple charges. Officers with the Primary Response Unit and Operational Support Unit were dispatched to a business in the Court Street South area at approximately 10:05 AM on September 25, 2026, in response to a weapons call for service. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived. A search of the area led to the suspect being located and arrested. A search of the accused led to the seizure of two-edged weapons. As a result of the investigation 24-year-old Silas KING from Thunder Bay is facing the following charges: Uttering threats – damage property Mischief under $5,000 Resist peace officer Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose The accused was remanded into custody following their first court appearance.
