Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit project leads to 276 HTA, CAIA, LLCA charges

A Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit project has led to numerous Highway Traffic Act (HTA), Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA), and Liquor Licence and Control Act (LLCA) charges.
 
Officers were conducting a back-to-school and aggressive driving project between September 6, 2026, and September 11, 2026.
 
Enforcement took place during the morning, afternoon, and evening hours.
 
A total of 276 charges were laid under the HTA, CAIA, and LLCA.
 
Five of the HTA charges were issued for stunt driving by speeding, two of which were for racing a motor vehicle.
 
Over 110 tickets were issued for speeding.
 
Other charges issued include: 
• Unsafe vehicle 
• Careless driving 
• Display screen visible to driver prohibited 
• Commercial motor vehicle related charges 
• Suspended driver
 
There were also provincial summonses issued for: 
• Drive motor vehicle with no licence 
• Owner operates motor vehicle on a highway with no insurance 
• Drive motor vehicle with no permit
 
An additional eight Criminal Code charges were also laid including: 
• Dangerous operation 
• Operation while impaired (three counts) 
• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) 
• Failure or refusal to comply with demand 
• Operation while prohibited

Primary Response Unit investigation into motor vehicle collision leads to charges

TB26040123 A Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Unit and Traffic Unit investigation has led to charges. Officers with the Primary Response Unit were dispatched to the Memorial Avenue and Central Avenue area on October 4, 2026, at approximately 7:20 PM in response to a motor vehicle collision. On scene, officers located a pickup truck and minivan with severe damage. One of the drivers was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit became involved in the investigation. As a result of the investigation, a Thunder Bay resident is facing the following charges: • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs • Dangerous operation The unnamed accused’s charges have not been read in court as they have been released under an undertaking with a future court date. The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.

SIU concludes Thunder Bay investigation

The Special Investigations Unit announced it has closed its investigation into an incident involving Thunder Bay Police Service officers that occurred in June 2026. The SIU found no basis to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence and concluded their investigation with no further process. With the conclusion of the SIU investigation, the Thunder Bay Police Service will now commence its required administrative review in accordance with Section 81 of the Community Safety and Policing Act. The purpose of the administrative investigation is to review member conduct, the policing provided, and procedures all as they relate to the incident. This administrative review will be reported to the Thunder Bay Police Service Board upon completion. Update: Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Unit investigation leads to arrest

A Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Unit investigation has resulted in multiple charges. Officers with the Primary Response Unit and Operational Support Unit were dispatched to a business in the Court Street South area at approximately 10:05 AM on September 25, 2026, in response to a weapons call for service. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived. A search of the area led to the suspect being located and arrested. A search of the accused led to the seizure of two-edged weapons. As a result of the investigation 24-year-old Silas KING from Thunder Bay is facing the following charges: Uttering threats – damage property Mischief under $5,000 Resist peace officer Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose The accused was remanded into custody following their first court appearance.
