UPDATE: Cumberland Street standoff concludes

A standoff in the city's north side has concluded with the suspect being taken into custody.


Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Cumberland Street North at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 4, after receiving a report of a weapons incident.


Police responded and contained the area. A standoff ensued. An individual that had been held hostage with the suspect was able to exit the location earlier in the day.


The male suspect was taken into police custody on Friday night.


Members of the Ontario Provincial Police's Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) team and Emergency Response Team (ERT) provided assistance.


A visible police presence will likely remain in the area into Saturday.

The Thunder Bay Police Service continues to investigate the discovery of human remains in the Thunder Centre area. At this time, no information regarding the deceased individual can be released until their identity has been confirmed. The separate investigation related to an earlier police presence in the same area remains ongoing. A visible police presence continues, and members of the public are asked to avoid the area. The Major Crime Unit is involved in the ongoing investigation. There is no threat to public safety. A separate investigation which was reported yesterday regarding a police presence in the same area is ongoing. Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the area around 4:30 PM on May 21, 2026, in response to a call for service. There is no threat to public safety.
